Hope College honored its 2014 volleyball team with a ring ceremony and unveiling of the Flying Dutch's national championship banner on the DeVos Fieldhouse rafters on Saturday.
Coach Becky Schmidt's Flying Dutch claimed their first national and the school's third in any team sport on November 24 when they defeated Emory (Georgia) in a five-set title match in Newport News, Virginia.
A sold-out crowd of 3,397 gave the volleyball team a standing ovation for the ceremony at halftime of the Hope-Trine men's basketball game.
Hope senior and 2014 NCAA Championship's Most Outsanding Player Jenna Grasmeyer told the Holland Sentinel that behind that national title banner is a lifetime of memories.
"To be able to have those flashbacks every time we walk in this gym, and show Holland what we have been able to accomplish, it's something I can't describe. It is something I have dreamed about my whole life," Grasmeyer said. "To be surrounded by people who saw us play for four years, it almost brought me to tears when everyone gave us a standing ovation."
