MIAA Men's Soccer Tournament Preview: Hope At Calvin

The Hope College men's soccer team kicks off the 2015 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Tournament with a semifinal match today at 3 p.m. at top-ranked Calvin.

Hope is seeded fourth in this year's MIAA Tournament. The Flying Dutchmen enter the match with a 9-9-1 overall record after winning their last three games in a row and four of their past five. They finished with a 6-7-1 league record.

Calvin is seeded first. The Knights are ranked No. 1 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III poll for the second time in school history. They are 18-0-1 overall and went 14-0 in MIAA regular-season matches to repeat as league champions.

The Flying Dutchmen have appeared in all five MIAA Tournaments since the format began in 2011. They have advanced to the championship match twice.

Hope owns a 4-2 record all-time in MIAA Tournament play. The Flying Dutchmen claimed league tournament titles in 2013 and 2011.

Hope is facing the Knights for the second time in the five-year history of MIAA Tournament. The two teams last met in postseason play in 2013 when the Flying Dutchmen won a shootout in the championship match. Hope outscored Calvin 5-4 in penalty kicks, with goalie Ethan Beswick sealing the win that clinched a NCAA Tournament berth with a save on Taylor Pruis.

Hope dropped both meetings this season to Calvin: 4-0 on September 19 at Calvin and 5-1 on October 14 at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Senior David Porte of Mattawan, Michigan (Mattawan HS) leads the Flying Dutchmen with eight goals this season.

Three Hope players have scored three goals apiece: senior Andreas Slette of Holland, Michigan (Holland HS), junior Alex Lindsey of East Lansing, Michigan (East Lansing HS) and freshman Jared Wondergem of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville HS).

The Flying Dutchmen have scored 30 goals this season. They have yielded 35.
