Box Score 2 Junior Kate Laverty of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Eaton Rapids HS), homered twice as the Hope College softball team opened the 2015 season with an 18-0, five-inning win against Fredonia State, N.Y., Friday in Winter Garden, Florida.
The Flying Dutch then dropped a 4-1 decision to Heidelberg, Ohio.
Against Fredonia, Laverty slammed a two-run homer to cap a six-run first for Hope. The Flying Dutch also received a RBI triple from senior Peyton Wells of Rockford, Michigan (Rockford HS), during the rally and run-scoring doubles from senior Julie Sobieski of St. Charles, Illinois (East HS), and senior Kelsey Cooper of Romeo, Michigan (Romeo HS).
Laverty hit a solo home run in the third.
Freshman Hayley Reitsma of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Christian HS), delivered a three-run homer in the fourth inning.
Senior Becca Phillips of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS), finished the scoring with a three-run triple in a six-run fifth.
The Flying Dutch totaled 20 hits to support three pitchers who combined for a two-hit shutout. Freshman Katie Singer of Howell, Michigan (Hartland HS), earned the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Against Heidelberg, Hope totaled eight hits but could only push across a RBI single from Wells in the third inning.
The Flying Dutch return to action on Saturday in Clermont, Florida, with a 9 a.m. game against Wittenberg, Ohio, and an 11 a.m. game against William Paterson.
