Hope Softball Snaps No. 8 Trine's 49-Game League-Record Win Streak

Box Score 1

Senior Peyton Wells and a slugging Hope College softball team made sure the longest regular-season conference win streak in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association history did not reach 50 games.

Wells delivered a go-ahead grand slam to propel the host Flying Dutch to a 15-10 win against eighth-ranked Trine on Tuesday in Game 2 of their doubleheader at Wolters Stadium.

Trine had extended its win streak in MIAA games to 49 games with a 5-3 victory in the opener.

Hope (12-4 overall) evened its MIAA record at 2-2 while dropping Trine to 19-2 overall and 3-1 in league play. The Thunder last lost a MIAA game on April 7, 2012, to Adrian.

Wells' third home run of the day and MIAA-leading fifth of the season capped a six-run top of the fifth that gave the Flying Dutch a 12-10 lead.

Wells, a senior from Rockford, Michigan (Rockford HS), followed run-scoring singles from sophomore rightfielder Sammi of Griffith, Indiana (Griffith HS), Adams and junior centerfielder Autumn Anderson of Dorr, Michigan (Wayland HS). Adams and Anderson finished with three hits apiece.

In the seventh, junior shortstop Jenna Maury of Lawton, Michigan (Lawton HS), delivered a three-run single.

The rallies came after Trine grabbed a 10-8 lead with an eight-run fifth.

Wells finished with six RBI. She also blasted a two-run homer in a four-run first.

Hope outhit Trine 16-12.

Winning pitcher Olivia Vacik of Bolingbrook, Illinois (Neuqua Valley HS), scattered three hits and one run over 3 2/3 innings of relief.

In Game 1, Wells and senior Becca Phillips of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS), each homered for the Flying Dutch in a losing effort. Trine snapped a scoreless tie with a four-run fourth.

Hope returns to action on Thursday with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at Olivet.
