No. 24 Softball Hits Four Homers, Sets Doubles Record In Albion Sweep

Box Score 1

Designated player Julie Sobieski and second baseman Sierra Mutschler each homered twice to power the 24th-ranked Hope College softball team to a 11-1 and 14-4 sweep at Albion on Saturday.

The Flying Dutch ran their season-high win streak to 11 games while improving to 22-4 overall and 8-2 in MIAA play. Both games ended after five innings.

Hope also broke the team record for doubles in a season with 57 after totaling 10 today. The old mark of 56 belonged to the 2008, 2007 and 2002 teams.

Mutschler raised her home-run total this season to a team-leading eight. The freshman from Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS), is tied for third place all-time at Hope with Carrie Scott (2000).

The Flying Dutch's single-season record of 10 is shared by current assistant coach Kelli Duimstra (2009) and Carrie Scott (2001).

Sobieski, a senior from St. Charles, Illinois (St. Charles East), has five home runs on the season.

Hope's 27 home runs as a team is third most all-time at Hope. The Flying Dutch trail 2009's 30 and 2011's 29.

In Game 1, Hope jumped ahead 4-0 in the top of the first on Sobieski's two-run single and Mutschler's RBI single.

Sobieski and Mutschler homered back-to-back in a five-run second, with Sobieski's a three-run blast and Mutschler's a solo shot. Sobieski finished with five RBI.

Winning pitcher Sydney Jones of South Lyon, Michigan (South Lyon East HS), allowed three hits in three innings of work. Jones (6-2) struck out five and did not walk a batter.

In Game 2, Hope erupted for 13 runs in the bottom of the third after falling behind 3-0.

Mutschler hit a three-run homer as the seventh of 16 batters during the rally. Sobieski capped the scoring with a two-run homer.

Winning pitcher Natalie Hiser of Westland, Michigan (Livonia Churchill HS), yielded four hits and four runs over four innings. Hiser (7-0) struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Hope returns to action on Tuesday with a makeup, nonleague doubleheader at Aurora, Illinois.
