Co-captains Evan Telzerow and Collin Breit led the charge as the Hope College men's golf team grabbed a 10-stroke lead Saturday during the first round of the MIAA's national-qualifying tournament in Angola, Indiana.
Telzerow, a senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forst Hills Northern HS), fired a 2-under-par 69 at Zollner Golf Course to share medalist honors with Adrian's Brandon Skytta.
Breit, a senior from Muskegon, Michigan (Western Michigan Christian HS), finished third with a 71.
The Flying Dutchmen recorded a team score of 284. Host Trine came in second at 294, while Adrian and Calvin tied for third at 297.
Hope hosts the final two rounds of the 54-hole qualifier Friday and Saturday, April 24-25, at Wuskowhan Players Club.
Senior Ben Lewis of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS), and sophomore Winton Munch of Traverse City, Michigan (Central HS), chipped in 72s to round out the scoring. They tied for fourth place with three other golfers.
Senior Ben Lanting of Littleton, Colorado (Front Range Christian HS), tied for 11th with a 75.
