Box Score 1
Home and individual home run records were reached for the Hope College softball team, but the 21st-ranked Flying Dutch settled for a split with Calvin College on Tuesday at Wolters Stadium.
Hope eclipsed the team, single-season home run record during a 19-4, five-inning win in the opener. Calvin, however, rebounded to edge the Flying Dutch 4-3 in the nightcap despite Hope's 35th home run of the season.
The outcome knocked Hope (26-6 overall, 11-3 MIAA) two games behind MIAA-leader Trine (31-2, 13-1 MIAA) with games remaining.
In Game 1, the Flying Dutch belted six home runs to pass the single-season record of 30 held by the 2009 team.
Freshman second baseman Sierra Mutschler of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS), had one of them for her 10th of the season. Mutschler, pictured, tied the individual school record shared by Carrie Scott (2001) and Kelli Duimstra (2009).
Freshman catcher Hayley Reitsma of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian HS) homered twice, while senior designated player Julie Sobieski of St. Charles, Illinois (St Charles East HS), delivered a grand slam to spark a 10-run first inning.
Junior shortstop Jenna Maury of Lawton, Michigan (Lawton HS), and freshman pinch-hitter Sarah Jones of Norton Shores, Michigan (Mona Shores HS), also homered.
Winning pitcher Sydney Jones of South Lyon, Michigan (East HS), improved her record to 8-2 while tossing four scoreless innings. Jones did now allow a hit while walking two and striking out six.
In Game 2, Sobieski's seventh home run of the season tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the sixth with a two-run blast, but the Knights responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning for the upset. Calvin is now 10-19 overall and 4-10 in MIAA play.
Senior leftfielder Becca Phillips of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS), had a RBI single in the fifth for the Flying Dutch.
Losing pitcher Natalie Hiser of Westland, Michigan (Livonia Churchill HS), allowed five hits and three runs over four innings. Hiser (8-1) struck out four.
The Game 2 loss, and Trine's sweep of Alma, knocked the Flying Dutch (26-6 overall), out of contention for the top seed in next week's MIAA Tournament. Hope remains in sole possession of second place in the MIAA with an 11-3 record.
