The 20th-ranked Hope College softball team was shut out in the opening game of the MIAA Tournament today, losing 5-0 to Alma in Angola, Indiana.

The Flying Dutch (27-8 overall) will play in a 3:30 p.m. elimination game today against either host Trine or Saint Mary's.

Freshman second baseman Sierra Mutschler of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS), went 2-for-2 and reached base on a hit by pitch. The Flying Dutch were outhit 10-5.

Losing pitcher Sydney Jones of South Lyon, Michigan (East HS), allowed two runs and four hits in three-plus innings of work.

Jones (8-3) faced two batters during a three-run fourth for the Scots (24-13) that broke a scoreless tie.

Hope left the bases loaded in the seventh.
