No. 26 Hope Women's Tennis Tops Saint Mary's, Reaches MIAA Final

Box Score

Senior Carli Capestany of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville HS), tied the Hope College women's tennis doubles record as the Flying Dutch won their MIAA Tournament semifinal on Thursday.

No. 26-ranked and top-seeded Hope swept fourth-seeded Saint Mary's 5-0 on VandePoel-Heeringa Stadium Courts to advance to Friday's 4 p.m. championship match.

Coach Adam Ford's regular-season champion Flying Dutch (19-4 overall) will host second-seeded Kalamazoo, a 5-0 winner against third-seeded Calvin on Thursday.

Capestany, pictured, teamed with sophomore Nancy Benda of Birmingham, Michigan (Seaholm HS), for her 76th career doubles win. She matched Jennifer Smith (1997-2000).

Capestany and Benda beat Kayle Sexton and Sam Setterblad 8-1 at No. 1 singles for Hope's first point in the match. The Flying Dutch led 3-0 at doubles.

The No. 2 doubles team of junior Claire Cooper of Williamston, Michigan (Williamston HS), and sophomore Kelly Daniel of Zeeland, Michigan (East HS), earned an 8-5 win.

The No. 3 doubles pairing of juniors Marie Holaway of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa (HS), and Anna Garcia of Battle Creek, Michigan (Lakeview HS), won 8-2.

Benda topped Andrea Fetters 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.

Sophomore Kate Mader of Granger, Indiana (Penn HS), secured the win by beating Margaret Faller 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.

The Flying Dutch are seeking their fourth consecutive MIAA Tournament title and the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Hope has beaten Kalamazoo in the past two MIAA title matches. The Flying Dutch won 5-4 at Kalamazoo in their April 11 dual match.
