Hope Softball Sweeps Chicago, Hands Coach Mary VandeHoef Career Milestone

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Hope College softball team gave head coach Mary VandeHoef a milestone victory during its 5-3 and 11-3 sweep of the University of Chicago on Monday.

VandeHoef earned her 100th career win during Game 2's six-inning win at Wolters Stadium. She is 100-74-2 in five seasons with the Flying Dutch.

VandeHoef is the third Hope coach to reach 100 victories Karla Wolters won 515 times in 835 games between 1998-2010, while Anne Irwin won 101 times in 262 games from 1977-1987.

The Flying Dutch now are 18-4 on the season and owners a seven-game win streak.

Game 2 saw Hope homer three times, including the second grand slam of the season. The Flying Dutch now have 23 home runs this season from seven different players.

Senior designated player Julie Sobieski of St. Charles, Illinois (St. Charles East HS), started a five-run first inning with a grand slam. It was her third home of the season.

Freshman second baseman Sierra Mutschler of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS), made it 5-1 Hope in the first with a solo shot.

Mutschler added a three-run, walkoff homer in the bottom of the sixth. Both Mutschler and Sobieski finished with four RBI against Chicago (9-9).

Reliever Kate Laverty of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Eaton Rapids) tossed 2 2/3 innings of one-run relief to earn the win. Laverty improved to 3-1.

In Game 1, Hope snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth.

Junior centerfielder Autumn Anderson of Dorr, Michigan (Wayland HS), knocked in the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice.

Senior leftfielder Becca Phillips of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS), followed with a RBI single. Phillips also had an RBI single in a two-run third that put the Flying Dutch ahead 2-1.

Reliever Olivia Vacik of Bolingbrook, Illinois (Neuqua Valley HS), claimed the win after firing 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Hope returns to action on Wednesday when the Flying Dutch host Kalamazoo for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at Wolters Stadium.
