Co-captains Collin Breit of Muskegon, Michigan (Western Michigan Christian HS), and Evan Telzerow of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Northern HS), both shot 4-over-par 76s to lead the Hope College men's golf during the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championships on Tuesday.
The Flying Dutchmen are tied for 28th place out of 41 teams with a score of 312 heading into Wednesday's second round at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C. They share the spot with Penn State-Behrend.
The teams were divided over Grandover's East and West Courses on a warm and muggy afternoon with temperatures near 90.
The par-72, 7,200-yard East Course proved the more difficult of the two with an average score of 78.48 strokes per round. The average West Course score Tuesday was 76.58.
Hope will play the East Course on Tuesday beginning at 8:25 a.m. The field will be cut to 15 teams for the final two rounds on Thursday and Friday. The MIAA champion Flying Dutchmen are 13 strokes off the cut line.
Sophomore Winton Munch of Traverse City, Michigan (Central HS), carded a 77 for Hope.
The Flying Dutchmen also received an 83 from senior Ben Lewis of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS), and an 84 from senior Ben Lanting of Littleton, Colorado (Front Range Christian HS).
Methodist, winners of a record 10 NCAA Division III men's golf titles, put all four of its scorers among the top-15 individuals and leads at 4-under.
