Box Score The Hope College block from Vanessa Reynhout and Katie Rietberg fell onto Calvin's side of the volleyball court and set off a jubilant Flying Dutch celebration.
The 10th-ranked Flying Dutch jubilantly added the third Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament title to their trophy case with a thrilling five-set win Saturday that handed the Knights their first loss of the season.
Hope's 14-25, 25-22, 25-16, 19-25, 15-13 victory gave the Flying Dutch the MIAA's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The 64-team field is announced on Monday at 12:30 p.m. on ncaa.com/liveschedule.
"It feels good to get that win, to see our team respond in some pressure moments — and respond with poise. That was two good teams slogging it out," Hope coach Becky Schmidt said after her team beat Calvin for the first time since the 2014 national semifinals — the Flying Dutch's national championship season.
Hope (25-5 overall) scored the first three points of the fifth set and never trailed. The Flying Dutch turned back three different Calvin attempts to tie the score, including the final point of the match after a Kristen Vyletel ace make it 14-13.
The Rietberg-Reynhout block of Laura Danhoff handed Hope a successful finish to a 2-1 set lead eight days after the Knights (27-1) took the final two sets at the very same Van Noord Arena for a regular-season victory over the Flying Dutch.
This year's Hope team joined previous MIAA Tournament champions from the Flying Dutchmen of 2010 and 2000.
"I want to first congratulate Hope. They deserved the victory tonight," Calvin coach Amber Warners said. "The one thing that I loved about our team is the way they kept fighting hard even when we were not having our best match."
Rietberg, a sophomore outside hitter from Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS), led the Flying Dutch with a match-high 16 kills.
Senior middle hitter Courtney Van Houzen of Traverse City, Michigan (West) chipped in 10 kills.
Senior outside hitter Sarah Feldpausch of White Cloud, Michigan (White Cloud) recorded nine kills.
Reynhout, a sophomore outside hitter from Freeport, Michigan (Lakewood) had eight kills.
