Jorgie Watson Caps Hope Swimming Career With 200 Breaststroke Three-Peat

Jorgie Watson did not hold anything back in her final race for the Hope College women's swimming and diving team.

The senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Catholic Central HS) overcame a late deficit to three-peat as Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion in the 200-yard breaststroke on Saturday in Grand Rapids.

Watson posted a winning time of 2 minutes, 23.03 seconds. She also won the event at the MIAA championships as a junior and sophomore.

"A great way to end my career in swimming," Watson said. "When I got second in the 100 breaststroke (on Friday), I knew I could win. I dug deep in the last race of my life."

Watson said she regained her composure amid an emotional finale.

"Before my race, I started to tear up. I was like 'Stop, you have a race still,'" Watson said. "Definitely relaxing, take a deep breath. At the last 100, when I saw I was down, I just knew 'This is your last race ever. Give it all you got!' It felt great."

Hope coach John Patnott was not surprised that seized the lead late in her race.

"She's a competitor," Patnott said. "When she's a little behind, she fights harder."

Watson is the third Flying Dutch swimmer to be MIAA 200 breaststroke champion at least three times.

Watson joins Betsy Vandenberg (1998-2001) and Megan Hunter (1994-94).
