Molly Meyer Sets MIAA, Hope Swim Records In 200 Backstroke

Molly Meyer simply did not want to be edged in a close race. Her motivation led to a league and Hope College record performance in the 200-yard backstroke at the 2016 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships on Saturday in Grand Rapids.

Meyer set MIAA and school records with a swim of 2 minutes, 1.61 seconds in the women's final at Calvin. The junior from South Bend, Indiana (John Adams HS) won the event for the first time.

"I did not want to be touched out again," Meyer said. "I was shocked by my time. That was really fun."

Hope coach John Patnott was proud of Meyer.

"Molly put together a 200 back that we've been trying to put together for two years," Patnott said. "I thought she had the ability, and she swam a perfect race with great turns."

Meyer said she was determined to win the race.

"Rarely do I go into a race with a time in mind," Meyer said. "This time I was really swimming to win because I knew my team needed me that more than any time I could get. That was my sole focus. The time came with it. I was really happy it. "
