Box Score 2 Back-to-back home runs from catcher Hayley Reitsma of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and first baseman Sarah Jones of Norton Shores, Michigan (Mona Shores HS) were among the highlights for the Hope College softball team Saturday in a split of games down south.
The fourth-inning power surge capped a 12-3, five-inning win for the Flying Dutch against Greenville, Illinois in Clermont, Florida.
Hope dropped the second game of the day 5-2 to St. Thomas, Minnesota and now sits 3-1 on the season.
The Flying Dutch pounded out 17 hits after Greenville struck for three runs in the top half of the first.
Hope scored four times in its half of the first, including a go-ahead RBI groundout from designated player Shay Pinhey of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer HS) that drove in Jones.
Reitsma and Jones started a five-run burst in the fourth. Reitsma hit a two-run blast, while Jones followed with a solo shot.
Reitsma went 3-for-3 with a game-high four RBIs.
Two other players had three hits for Hope: centerfielder Autumn Anderson of Dorr, Michigan (Wayland HS) and second baseman Sierra Mutschler of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS).
Winning pitcher Kate Laverty of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Eaton Rapids HS) allowed six hits and three runs in five innings. She struck out four and walked two.
Against St. Thomas, Hope tied the score with a two-run top of the third, but yielded two runs in the Tommies' half of the third and one more in the fourth.
Mutschler led the Flying Dutch by going 3-of-3. She followed a RBI single from rightfielder Sammi Adams of Griffith, Indiana (Griffth HS) with a double to plate Adams.
Hope returns to action on Monday with games against Washington & Jefferson and Wellesley.
