The Hope College men's track & field team claimed runner-up honors at the 10-team Emory Classic on Saturday in Atlanta.
The Flying Dutchmen finished with a score of 186 points — just 13 fewer than winner Emory.
Hope won two events on Saturday and three total for the two-day competition.
Juniors Nicholas Salomon of Troy, Michigan (Detroit Jesuit HS) and Cameron Jones of Holland, Michigan (Black River HS) posted the top two times in the 800 meters at 1:53.83 and 1:54.32, respectively.
Hope clocked a winning time in the 4x100 relay as senior Luke Washington of Bolingbrook, Illinois (Timothy Christian HS), freshman Justin Freeman of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS), sophomore Matt Ruff of Wayne, Illinois (Wheaton Academy) and senior Boone Marois of Traverse City, Michigan (Central HS) went 42.70.
The Flying Dutchmen had another relay come in fifth in the event: freshman Ben Turner of Albion, Michigan (Olivet HS), freshman Tucker Gibbons of Fowlerville, Michigan (Fowlerville HS), freshman Justice Burley of Holland, Michigan (Holland HS) and junior Josh Smith of Southfield, Michigan (Birmingham Stenholm HS) at 45.34.
Hope had second- and third-place 4x400 relays. Senior Gavin Midlam of East Lansing, Michigan (East Lansing HS), sophomore Brandon Wolliston of Remus, Michigan (Chippewa Hills), Ruff and Salomon posted a run of 3:22.65.
Sophomore Mitchell DePree of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS), Jones, freshman Prescott Binder of Zeeland, Michigan (Zeeland East HS) and junior Richard Medina of Bensensville, Illinois (Timothy Christian HS) went 3:30.13.
Marois and Freeman took second and third in the 100-meter dash with times of 10.94 and 10.97 seconds.
Turner led a group of five Hope pole vaulters with a runner-up effort of 4.0 meters (13 feet-1 ½).
Others to score were: senior David Lunderberg of Grandville, Michigan (Grandville HS) in third at 3.85 meters (12-7 ¾), freshman Tate Knapp of Dorr, Michigan (Hamilton HS) in fourth at 3.85 (12-7 ¾), sophomore Nicholas Brohl of Monclova, Ohio (St. John's Jesuit) in sixth at 3.70 (12-1 ½) and Burley at 3.40 (12-1 ½).
Freshman Louis Kopp of Spring, Texas (Providence Classical HS) finished second in the triple jump at 13.21 meters (43-4 ½). Washington finished sixth at 12.58 meters (41-3 ¼) and Gibbons was seventh at 12.26 (40-2 ¾).
Marois placed third in the 200-meter dash at 23.38, while Freeman was fifth at 22.82.
Senior Taylor Myer of Ludington, Michigan (Ludington HS) posted a third-place toss in the hammer throw of 44.94 meters (147-05). Myer took sixth in the shot put at 12.55.
Three Hope runners scored in the 400 meters: Midlam in fourth at 50.45, Wolliston in sixth at 50.63 and Ruff in seventh at 51.01.
Two Flying Dutchmen scored in the 1,500-meter run seeded: seniors Ryan Boxeth of Saline, Michigan (Saline HS) in fifth at 4:10.05 and Kyle Anderson of Shorewood, Minnesota (Minnetonka HS) in eighth at 4:14.12.
Junior Ryan Arndt of Holland, Michigan (Zeeland West HS) took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles at 16.92.
Freshmen Chase Gaca of Kingsley, Michigan (Kingsley Area HS) and Tyler Webb of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grandville HS) came in seventh and eighth in the discus at 35.12 and 33.61.
Hope returns to action on Friday, April 1 with a 3 p.m. dual meet against visiting Calvin.
