Hope College's Nancy Benda has claimed Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors for matches through April 17.
The junior from Birmingham, Michigan (Seaholm HS) is recognized for the first time after winning a total of six matches at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles last week for the No. 34-ranked Flying Dutch.
Benda rolled through singles play by winning three matches in straight sets and dropped just seven total games across six sets.
In singles action, Benda defeated Alma's top player in a 6-2, 6-1 decision. She followed it up with a pair of singles wins against competition from regionally-ranked teams in the top spot. Benda posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Coe and finished the week with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Augustana's top option.
In doubles play, Benda teamed up with senior Marie Holaway of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) at the No. 1 spot. The pairing surrendered just eight games total in three victories. The Hope duo defeated Alma 8-1 in MIAA play and then finished the week with an 8-4 win against Coe and an 8-3 victory over Augustana.
