Two 1-under-par rounds powered the Hope College men's golf team to a winning performance at the second NCAA Division III Championships qualifying round for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association on Friday.
Junior Winton Munch of Traverse City, Michigan (Central HS) and sophomore Kade Hoeksema of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian HS) each carded 70s at Wuskowhan Players Club to help the Flying Dutchmen post a winning score of 288.
Hope extended its overall lead in the 54-hole event to 12 strokes over second-place Calvin. The Flying Dutchmen finished seven strokes ahead of Calvin on Friday.
The final round of the tournament tees off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 30 at Wuskowhan Players Club, Hope's home course. The cumulative winner receives the MIAA's automatic berth to next month's NCAA Division III Championships.
Munch and Hoeksema shared low-round honors with Calvin's Ben Van Scoyk.
Munch shot 35s on both the front and back nines. He birdied two holes, bogeyed one and recorded par on the rest.
Hoeksema birdied four holes, bogeyed three and parred the remainder.
Freshman Ben Kramer of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS) chopped in a 72 for the Flying Dutchmen. He totaled 15 pars, 1 birdie and two bogeys.
Freshman Andrew Goble of Brighton, Michigan (Brighton HS) rounded out Hope's scoring with a 76.
Freshman Josh Gibson of Grandville, Michigan (Grandville HS) had an 80 for the Flying Dutchmen.
Hope's 36-hole total is 585. The Flying Dutchmen are followed by Calvin (597), Trine (631) and Kalamazoo (642).
