Hannah VanAlst's Six Goals Spark Hope Women's Lacrosse Past Alma

Hannah VanAlst packed quite a scoring punch for the Hope College women's lacrosse team in her first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association match.

The freshman from Clio, Michigan (Flint Powers Catholic HS) scored a career-high six goals to lead the Flying Dutch to a 14-11 win at Alma on Wednesday.

Hope improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in MIAA play.

VanAlst scored the first two goals of the match, with the first coming 25 seconds into the first half.

The Flying Dutch never trailed as they were tied twice during the first half. Hope snapped a 5-5 tie with goals from sophomore Grace Ahlgrim of Libertyville, Illinois (Libertyville HS) and VanAlst in a nine-second span three minutes before halftime.

Seven different players recorded at least one goal for Hope against Alma (3-4, 0-1 MIAA).

Freshman Allison Darnell of Farmington Hills, Michigan (North Farmington HS) and junior Alexandra Webb of Woodland Hills, California (Calabasas HS) totaled two apiece.

Senior Abigale Cassella of Okemos, Michigan (Okemos HS), sophomore Erin Caton of Rochester Hills, Michigan (Rochester Adams HS) and junior Reinie Thomas of Portage, Michigan (Portage Central HS) each added one.

Goalie Alexandria Watts of Union, Michigan (Edwardsburg HS) made five saves in the first half to earn her first win in goal.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, April 9. The Flying Dutch host Adrian for a noon match at Van Andel Stadium.

The match is part of joining a statewide effort to aid the response to the Flint water crisis.

Hope and Adrian are two of 14 collegiate women's lacrosse programs across the state participating in the initiative.

Others taking part are: Albion, Alma, Aquinas, Calvin, Central Michigan, Detroit, Grand Valley State, Kalamazoo, Lawrence Tech, Michigan, Olivet and Siena Heights.
