Sarah Murphy soared high and came down as a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion in the pole vault on Thursday at the MIAA Field Day at Olivet College.
The sophomore from Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Northern HS) became Hope College's third league champion in the event by clearing 3.20 meters (10 feet, 6 inches).
Murphy follows Emily VanderMeer (2008) and Jennifer VanderMeer (2007) as league champions from the Flying Dutch.
Murphy helped Hope total 50.5 points for second place after the first day of competition. Calvin (87.5) leads.
Friday's finale begins at 10 a.m. with field events and 1:30 p.m. with running finals.
Sophomore Alison Rich of Haslett, Michigan (Haslett HS) finished MIAA runner-up in the high jump after clearing 1.56 meters (5-1). Senior Jane Pearson of Lake City, Michigan (Northern Michigan Christian HS) tied for seventh at 1.45 meters (4-9).
Sophomore Haley Fischman of Grand Ledge, Michigan (Lansing Catholic Central HS) came in third in the discus at 34.31 meters (112-6).
Hope finished third and fourth in the 10,000 meters: senior Emily Joosse of Chillicothe, Ohio (Zane Trace HS) in third at 38.27.80 and Emily Hamilton fourth at 38:34.91.
Senior Kaylee Kish of Bay Village, Ohio (Bay HS) came in third in the pole vault at 3.15 meters (10.4). Sophomore Hannah Howard of Jacksonville, Illinois (Routt Catholic HS) was eighth at 2.90 meters (9-6 1/4).
Sophomore Rachel Satkiewicz of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (Seaholm HS) grabbed the top seed for the 400-meter final by posting a preliminary run of 1:00.20.
Sophomore Alejandra Gomez Limon of Rochester, Michigan (Notre Dame Prep HS) took seventh in the hammer throw at 39.27 meters (128-9).
Sophomore Rachael Webb of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grandville HS) is seeded first in the 800 meters after clocking a top preliminary time of 2:19.63. Senior Emma Ropski of Park Ridge, Illinois (Maine Township HS) was third at 2:24.32.
Satkiewicz took second in the 100-meter preliminaries with a run of 26.37. Pearson was fifth at 26.56.
Junior Sierra Schultz of Kellogg, Iowa (Grinnell Community HS) placed third in the 400-meter hurdle preliminary by finishing in 1:08.07.
