Maura Lichiello Wins 5,000 Meters at WashU Invite

Sophomore Maura Lichiello led a dominating 5,000-meter pack for the Hope College women's track and field team at the Washington University in St. Louis Invite on Saturday.

Lichiello (Howell, Michigan / Howell) clocked a winning time of 18 minutes, 59.88 seconds, fronting a group of four Flying Dutch runners in the Top 5 in the field.

Sophomore Rylie Kraus (Granville, Ohio / Granville) placed third at 19:08.39 and was followed by teammates Nidia Martinez (Fennville, Michigan / Fennville) in fourth at 19:13.08 and Claire Vellinga (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) in fifth at 19:36.16. Junior Elie Bodary (New Boston, Michigan / Father Gabriel Richard) was eighth at 19:36.28.

Hope recorded six more Top 5 finishes during the non-scoring meet.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Tessa Rindfliesch (Holland, Michigan / Zeeland West) posted a runner-up time of 11:37.08. Freshman Chloe Caulfield (Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan / Grosse Pointe South) took fourth at 12:01.63.

In the 200 meters, senior Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) recorded a second-place effort of 12.34 seconds.

In the 100 meters, Schermerhorn placed third at 12.07. Sophomore Sofia Fisher (Lombard, Illinois / Montini Catholic) took fifth at 12.21.

In the shot put, senior Kamryn Bice (Monroe, Michigan / Monroe) heaved a fifth-place toss of 11.60 meters (38-0 ¾).

Hope competes next on Friday, April 10, at 4:30 p.m. Central at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville's 5K Invitational.
