Boone Marois Earns Two MIAA Titles; Men's Track & Field Finishes Second

Boone Marois made the most of his last Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Field Day for the Hope College men's track & field team.

The senior from Traverse City, Michigan (Central HS) claimed league championships in two different events to help the Flying Dutch finish second in the overall standings.

Hope totaled 160 points during the two-day meet at Olivet that concluded on Friday. Calvin (232.5) won.

Marois reclaimed the 200-meter MIAA title he earned as a freshman with a winning run of 22.02 seconds. It is the ninth time a Hope male runner has placed first in the event.

Junior Nicholas Salomon of Troy, Michigan (Detroit Jesuit HS) became the sixth Flying Dutchmen runner to earn the 800-meter championship by clocking a winning time of 1:56.03. Hope has won the event a total of nine times.

Marois anchored the 4x100 relay that took first. He and senior Dion Goliday of Muskegon, Michigan (Oakridge HS), freshman Justin Freeman of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) and junior Matt Pelyhes of Augusta, Michigan (Gull Lake HS) posted a MIAA-record time of 41.49 that gave the Flying Dutchmen their sixth MIAA championship in the event and was just 0.01 off their school record.

Marois led a group of four Hope runners in the 100 meters with a runner-up effort of 10.80 seconds. He was followed by Freeman in third at 10.84, Goliday in fifth at 10.99 and senior Luke Washington of Bolingbrook, Illinois (Timothy Christian HS) in seventh at 11.24.

Freshman Louis Kopp of Spring, Texas (Providence Classical HS) finished MIAA runner-up in the triple jump at 13.59 meters (44-7). He was followed by Goliday in fourth at 13.03 (42-9), sophomore Zach Williams of Dowagiac, Michigan (Dowagiac HS) in fifth at 12.98 meters (42-7) and Washington in eighth at 12.60 (41-3).

Hope came in second in the 4x400 relay as sophomore Matt Ruff of Wayne, Illinois (Wheaton Academy), sophomore Brandon Wolliston of Remus, Michigan (Chippewa Hills HS), junior Cameron Jones of Holland, Michigan (Black River HS) and Salomon went 3:18.41.

Freeman took third in the 200 meters at 22.62. Pelyhes was sixth at 22.97.

Two from the Flying Dutch placed in the 400 meters: Ruff in third at 48.75 and Wolliston in fifth at 49.32.

Jones took third in the 800 with a time of 1:57.19.

Sophomore Ben Pederson of Mount Prospect, Illinois (Prospect HS) finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:39.49.

Senior Taylor Myer of Ludington, Michigan (Ludington HS) recorded a third-place hammer throw of 47.87 meters (157-1).

Freshman Ben Turner of Albion, Michigan (Olivet HS) came in fourth in the pole vault at 4.30 meters (14-2).

Three from Hope scored in the high jump: sophomore William Henkel of Lambertville, Michigan (Erie-Mason HS) in fifth at 1.84 meters (6-4), freshman Eddie Ip of Grand Rapids, Michigan (South Christian HS) in seventh at 1.81 (5-10) and Williams in eighth at 1.75 (5-9). 

A Hope pair earned points in the 400-meter hurdles: Midlam in seventh at 58.95 and junior Richard Medina of Bensenville, Illinois (Timothy Christian HS) in eighth at 1:00.40.
