Only three strokes separated the five members the of Hope College men's golf team during Saturday's round, and the depth paid off with a victory in the first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Jamboree of the season.
The Flying Dutchmen shot a team score of 284 at Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Indiana to finish four strokes ahead of runner-ups Kalamazoo and Trine. Calvin (290) was fourth.
Senior Winton Munch of Traverse City, Michigan (Central HS) and sophomore Josh Gibson of Grandville, Michigan (Grandville) both tied for second place individual with 1-under-par 70s. Munch is pictured.
Sophomore Andrew Goble of Brighton, Michigan (Brighton) chipped in a 71 to tie for fifth place.
Junior Kade Hoeksema of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian) and sophomore Ben Kramer of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake) rounded out Hope's scoring with 12th-place 73s.
This season marks a new format to determine a MIAA champion. There are four 18-hole MIAA Jamborees and a season-ending, 36-hole championship event.
Hope returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the next MIAA Jamboree hosted at Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek.
