Men's Golf Grabs First-Round Lead At Irish Hills Invitational

Five rounds within four strokes of each other powered the Hope College men's golf team to a first-round lead at the Adrian College Irish Hills Invitational Friday in Jackson, Michigan.

Sophomore Josh Gibson of Grandville, Michigan (Grandville HS) led the balanced effort as the Flying Dutchmen shot a team score of 291 to open the eight-team event at Grande Golf Club. They were six strokes better than second-place Calvin and 16 up on third-place Adrian.

Gibson fired a 1-under-par 71. He is in second place in the individual standings.

Senior Winton Munch of Traverse City, Michigan (Central) and junior Kade Hoeksema of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian) both carded 73s to tie for third place.

Sophomore Ben Kramer of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake) rounded out Hope's scoring with a ninth-place 74.

Sophomore Andrew Goble of Brighton, Michigan (Brighton) is 11th after a 75.

The tournament's final round is scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17.
