Josh Gibson Shoots 4-Under 68, Men's Golf Wins Third MIAA Jamboree

A Josh Gibson-fueled charge led to a record-setting round for the Hope College men's golf team on Wednesday.

The Flying Dutchmen fired the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's lowest jamboree score at The Medalist Golf Club with a 289. They passed their previous MIAA record of 294 from the 2006-07 season.

Gibson's second-consecutive, 4-under-par 68 topped Hope. The sophomore from Grandville, Michigan (Grandville HS) topped the field after shooting 32 on the back nine alone.

Gibson came within three strokes of the MIAA record for The Medalist set by Joel Bickel of Tri-State (now Trine) in 2005. He finished two strokes ahead of runner-up David Smith of Kalamazoo on Wednesday.

Gibson is averaging 69.3 strokes per 18 holes over three MIAA Jamborees this season.

Gibson helped the Flying Dutchmen extend their lead in the overall standings to 15 strokes over second-place Kalamazoo after 54 holes. Hope is 21 up on third-place Calvin.

Gibson also posted a 68 on Saturday en route to medalist honors at the Adrian College Irish Hills Intercollegiate at Grande Golf Club in Jackson.

Hope's record-setting day also included an even-par round from sophomore Ben Kramer of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake), 73 from senior Winton Munch of Traverse City, Michigan (Central) and 76 from sophomore Andrew Goble of Brighton, Michigan (Brighton).

Kramer tied for third place, while Munch tied for sixth. Goble tied for 11th.

Junior Kade Hoeksema of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian HS) chipped in a 78 for 16th place.

Freshman Noah Weigle of Grandville, Michigan (Grandville) had an 84.

Hope returns to action on Monday, Sept. 26 at the MIAA Jamboree at Watermark Country Club in Grand Rapids.
