Winton Munch and the Hope College men's golf team are zeroing in on a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title repeat.
The Flying Dutchmen extended their overall lead heading into next month's final 36-hole tournament by winning Monday's 18-hole jamboree in Grand Rapids. They shot a winning score of 299 at Watermark Country Club to finish four strokes ahead of second-place Adrian and seven ahead of third-place Calvin.
Munch, pictured, topped the Flying Dutchmen with a 1-under-par 71. The senior from Traverse City, Michigan (Central HS) tied for first place individually with Trine's Grant Brettnacher.
Sophomore Josh Gibson of Grandville, Michigan (Grandville) chipped in a 72 to tie for third. He leads the season medalist standings with an eight-stroke lead over second-place Munch.
Junior Kade Hoeksema of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian) and sophomore Andrew Goble of Brighton, Michigan (Brighton) each tied for 15th with 78s.
Other scoring rounds for Hope came from freshman Daniel Settecerri of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (Bloomfield Hills) with a 77 and sophomore Ben Kramer of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake) with a 79.
Hope took first in all four of this season's jamborees. The Flying Dutchmen have a cumulative score of 1,167 strokes — 26 better than second-place Kalamazoo, 27 ahead of third-place Calvin and 39 ahead of fourth-place Trine. Adrian is in fifth — 43 strokes behind Trine.
The MIAA's final fall event is a 36-hole championship at Battle Creek Country Club on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7-8. The top four teams advance to next spring's NCAA Division III Championship qualifier, with the regular-season champ hosting the final 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament.
