The Hope College women's swimming & diving team competed neck and neck with rival Calvin until the final event on Saturday before losing the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association dual meet 150-146 in Grand Rapids.
The Flying Dutch finished first in eight different events and recorded the top two times in four events.
Calvin took the meet after placing first and second in the meet-ending 4x100-yard freestyle relay.
Hope swept the top three spots in the 100 butterfly: freshman Erin Emmert of Grand Blanc, Michigan (Flint Powers Catholic HS) at 2:14.59, junior Chloe Palajac of Dearborn, Michigan (Dearborn) at 2:15.73, and junior Elizabeth Fris of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) at 2:19.26.
Freshmen Paula Nolte of Elmhurst, Illinois (York Community) and Erica Slenk of Zeeland, Michigan (Holland Christian) went 1-2 in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Nolte won both events in 1:09.49 and 2:31.51, respectively. Slenk had swims of 1:10.88 and 2:34.57.
Palajac won the 100 butterfly in 59.22 and the 200 individual medley at 2:13.34. Senior Molly Meyer of South Bend, Indiana (John Adams) was runner-up in the 100 butterfly at 1:00.57, while Nolte was second in the 200 individual medley at 1:00.57.
Meyer placed first in the 100 backstroke at 59.73 and the 200 backstroke at 2:09.12.
Fris took first in the 1,000 freestyle at 10:55.87.
Hope's next meet is Saturday, Jan 14 at the Michigan-Illinois Quad at Lake Forest, Illinois.
