The Hope College women's swimming & diving team set a school record at the first session of the 2017 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships on Wednesday at Holland Community Aquatic Center.
The Flying Dutch clocked a runner-up time in the 800-meter freestyle relay of 7 minute, 39.15 seconds to surpass the old mark that had stood for five years.
Senior Molly Meyer of South Bend, Indiana (John Adams HS), senior Elizabeth Fris of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa), junior Abigail Brinks of Commerce Township, Michigan (Walled Lake Northern), and junior Chloe Palajac of Dearborn, Michigan (Dearborn) bettered the 2012 mark of 7:39.58 belonging to Sarah Sohn, Erin Holstad, Chelsea Wiese and Libby Westrate.
The effort gave Hope a second-place total of 34 points after the opening day of competition. Calvin leads with 40 points. Kalamazoo (32) is in third and followed by Albion (30), Alma (28) and Olivet 26.
The four-day meet resumes on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. with preliminaries. The evening's finals start at 5:30 p.m.
