Shortstop Shay Pinhey's and catcher Hayley Reitsma's powerful bats propelled the Hope College softball team to an 8-0 win against Babson, Massachusetts on Tuesday in Clermont, Florida.
The two combined for five RBI and three extra-base hits to help the Flying Dutch rebound from a 5-1 loss to Bowdoin in the morning. Hope is now 6-2 on the season.
Pinhey went 3-for-5 with four RBI against Babson (5-3). She cracked a run-scoring single in the fourth, a RBI double in the sixth and a two-run double in the seventh.
Reitsma smacked a two-out solo homer in the first inning. It was her first homer of the season.
First baseman Sarah Jones of Norton Shores, Michigan (Mona Shores) added a two-run single in the third.
Winning pitcher Sydney Jones of South Lyon, Michigan (East) tossed her third complete-game shutout of the season in four appearances. Jones (4-0) struck out seven and allowed four baserunners — all on singles.
Against Bowdoin (6-5), leftfielder Noelle Jackson of Grand Blanc, Michigan (Grand Blanc) had two hits and a RBI single for the Flying Dutch.
Hope returns to action on Thursday, March 23 with games against St. Catherine and Fontbonne in Clermont, Florida.
