Sydney Jones broke the Hope College softball career strikeout record for a pitcher during a loss at Manchester, Indiana on Tuesday.

The junior righthander from South Lyon, Michigan (East HS) struck out 13 during a 4-3 defeat in Game 1 of the nonleague doubleheader to give herself 401 for her career.

Jones, pictured, passed Andrea Adams (398 from 2000-2003) and Kim Grotenhuis (396 from 1998-2001) against Manchester.

Manchester also completed the sweep with a 9-1 win in Game 2.

Jones (10-3) went the distance in the opener. She now has a career-high 148 strikeouts on the season and is within eight of equaling the 2002 school record belonging to Andrea Adams.

It was the eighth double-digit strikeout start of the season for Jones and the third in a row.

Manchester (11-17-1) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after Hope took a 3-2 lead on a RBI double from shortstop Shay Pinhey of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer) and a RBI single from third baseman Katrina Ellis of Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich).

The loss snapped a season-high, 10-game win streak for the Flying Dutch.

Centerfielder Sammi Adams of Griffith, Indiana (Griffith HS) totaled five hits in seven at-bats during the doubleheader. Adams went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in Game 1 and 3-for-3 with one run scored in Game 2.

Hope returns to action on Thursday, April 20 with a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Calvin. First pitch is 3:30 p.m.
