Josh Gibson's record-making round of 6-under-par 65 helped the Hope College men's golf team keep the overall lead at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association NCAA Division III Championship qualifier heading into the final round.
The sophomore from Grandville, Michigan (Grandville HS) fueled Hope College's second-place total of 282 at Wuskowhan Players Club on Friday that was two strokes behind Calvin College's effort.
The Flying Dutchmen hold a seven-stroke lead against Calvin going into Saturday's 9 a.m. finale. The top cumulative score after 54 holes receives the MIAA's automatic berth to next month's national tournament.
Gibson, pictured, equaled Nick Campbell's 65 at Trine's Zollner Golf Course during the 2012 MIAA NCAA qualifier for the lowest MIAA round in Hope's history.
Gibson also eclipsed the Flying Dutchmen's lowest round on its home course at Wuskowhan Players Club. Tommy Yamaoka shot a 67 there in 2005.
A 65 has been reached three other times by a MIAA golfer in a league event: Campbell, Tri-State's Joel Bickel in 2005 at The Medalist in Marshall, Michigan and Adrian's Jordan Kelly in 2010 at Zollner.
Gibson recorded four birdies and one eagle on the front nine for a 30. He eagled the 536-yard, par-5 9th.
Gibson edged two Calvin golfers for medalist honors: John Van Noord (67) and Ben VanScoyk (68).
Hope senior Winton Munch of Traverse City, Michigan (Central) tied for fourth at 1-under.
Junior Kade Hoeksema of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian) came in 1-over for seventh place.
Sophomore Andrew Goble of Brighton, Michigan (Brighton) tied for 11th at 4-over to round out the Flying Dutchmen's scoring.
Sophomore Ben Kramer of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake) tied for 15th at 7-over.
Trine (300) took third, while Kalamazoo (302) finished fourth. Hope leads Kalamazoo by 33 strokes and Trine by 51.
