Cross Country Teams Earn National Academic Honors For 27th Time

The Hope College men's and women's cross country teams have repeated as recipients of the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association Team Academic Awards for the 2017 season.

In addition, six Flying Dutch runners claimed Individual USTFCCCA All-Academic Awards.

For a team to be considered for the team award, it must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional meet and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.10 on a 4.0 scale.

The Flying Dutch recorded a 3.65 GPA and won the Great Lakes Regional title. They went on to finish place 19th at the national meet. This is their 28th consecutive honor.

The Flying Dutchmen finished with a 3.13 GPA and came in 16th at the regional. This is their 27th honor in 28 years.

"Earning this award for 28 years in a row demonstrates Hope's commitment to the scholar-athlete, the heart of Division III athletics," head coach Mark Northuis said. "Recognized achievements in the classroom, laboratory, and concert hall as well as on the cross country course have been a hallmark of the Hope College Cross Country tradition of excellence."

In order to qualify for the USTFCCCA honor, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 and finish in the top 25 percent of their respective regional championship meet.

Hope's individual honorees were: seniors Alissa Frazee of Watervliet, Michigan (Home School), Alexis Guttilla of St. Charles, Illinois (Westminster Christian HS), and Rachael Webb of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grandville), juniors Emily Hamilton of Naperville, Illinois (North) and Avery Lowe of North Muskegon, Michigan (North Muskegon), and sophomore Chelsea Miskelley of Holland, Michigan (Black River).
