The Hope College softball team is riding a four-game win streak after a thrilling seventh-inning rally for a victory against Tufts (Massachusetts) and a shutout of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Monday in Clermont, Florida.
The Flying Dutch are now 6-2 on the season.
Hope opened the day by scoring twice in the top of the seventh to edge Tufts 3-2.
Winning pitcher Katie Singer of Howell, Michigan (Hartland HS) and shortstop Savannah Dixon of Niles, Michigan (Edwardsburg) started the frame with back-to-back singles. Singer scored and tied the score when Tufts mishandled the bunt attempt from leftfielder Jo Cook of Birch Run, Michigan (Birch Run).
Two batters later, Dixon touched home plate with the go-ahead run after first baseman Shay Pinhey of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer) reached on a fielder's choice. With the bases loaded, Cook avoided a tag on her way to third to break up a double-play attempt.
Pitcher Sydney Jones of South Lyon, Michigan (East) tossed a 1-2-3 seventh for her first save of the season. Jones started on the mound and hurled the first four innings.
Singer, who relieved Jones in the fifth, tossed two scoreless innings for her first win of the day.
Against Eau Claire, second baseman Sierra Mutschler of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland), pictured, hit her second home run of the season and the 21st of her career. She ranks second all-time in career home runs at home — trailing the 23 of Carrie Scott (1998-2001).
Singer and reliever Tena Baar of Byron Center, Michigan (Byron Center) combined on a four-hit shutout.
Singer scattered four hits over five innings of work. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.
