Twenty-two hits at the plate and 10 scoreless innings of pitching propelled the Hope College softball team to a pair of 9-0 victories on Friday.
The Flying Dutch completed a nearly perfect spring break to Clermont, Florida, with back-to-back, five-inning victories against Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Allegheny (Pennsylvania).
Hope (11-2 overall) won 10 of 11 games down south.
First baseman Shay Pinhey of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer) totaled a team-high four hits, two RBI and one run scored over the two games. Pinhey delivered two run-scoring singles against Allegheny.
Pinhey, pictured, is tops among Flying Dutch starters with a .500 batting average.
A six-run bottom of the second fueled Hope against Allegheny. Designated player Sarah Jones of Norton Shores, Michigan (Mona Shores) capped the rally with a two-run single.
The Flying Dutch finished the game with 10 hits, including two triples and two doubles.
Winning pitcher Tena Baar of Byron Center, Michigan (Byron Center) fired a three-hit shutout. Baar (2-0) struck out four.
In the first game of the day, Hope used a four-run top of the third to break away from Oshkosh.
After a solo home run in the first, catcher Hayley Reitsma of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian) contributed the decisive third-inning rally with an RBI single. Second baseman Sierra Mutschler of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland) capped it with a two-run double.
The Flying Dutch collected a total of 12 hits, including five extra-base.
Winning pitcher Sydney Jones of South Lyon, Michigan (East) tossed a three-hit shutout one day after throwing the 10th no-hitter in team history. Jones (5-1) struck out nine and walked one en route to lowering her ERA to 1.11.
