Both Justin Freeman and the Hope College 4x800 relay made runs memorable in Atlanta on Saturday for the Flying Dutchmen track & field team at the Emory Invitational.
Freeman, a junior from Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS), sprinted to the fastest time this year in NCAA Division III in the 100 meters with a second-place run of 10.56 seconds.
The 4x800 relay raced to a winning effort with sophomore Ty Hergenreder of Davison, Michigan (Goodrich), sophomore Brenden Jones of Holland, Michigan (Black River), freshman Zackary Murphy of Coldwater, Michigan (Coldwater) and senior Peter Timperman of Lafayette, Indiana (Faith Christian) going 8 minutes, 7.08 seconds.
The performances helped the Flying Dutchmen posted a fourth-place score of 69.5 points that was tops among Division III teams in the 21-team field.
Freeman, pictured, finished runner-up to Josh Parson of NAIA's Tennessee Wesleyan, who ran 10.35.
Hope placed second in three other events.
Senior Brandon Wolliston of Remus, Michigan (Chippewa Hills) was runner-up after a 49.34 in the 400 meters. Tennessee Wesleyan's Devonte Fletcher went 48.40.
Wollison also ran the second leg of the runner-up 4x400 relay. He teamed with freshman Terrell Solberg of Traverse City, Michigan (Central), junior Collin Thomas of Novi, Michigan (Novi) and senior Matt Ruff of Wayne, Illinois (Wheaton Academy) for a run of 3:20.27 that was second only to Truett-McConnell's 3:19.68.
Junior Ben Turner of Albion, Michigan (Olivet) took second in the pole vault after clearing 4.25 meters (13-11).
Three Hope high jumpers scored: sophomore Joshua Izenbart of Glenwood, Illinois (Homewood-Flossmoor) in third at 1.95 meters, sophomore Brandon Maurice of Howell, New Jersey (Howell) in a fourth-place time at 1.90 meters, and freshman Ethan Larson of Glen Ellyn, Illinois (Glenbard West) in seventh at 1.85 meters.
Sophomore Timothy Ivery of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (Brother Rice) took sixth in the discus with a toss of 39.76 meters.
Junior Chase Gaca of Kingsley, Michigan (Kingsley Area) placed sixth in the hammer throw at 43.50 meters.
The 4x100 relay came in sixth as sophomore Korey Derr of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Northview), sophomore Emmanuel Harinda of Holland, Michigan (Holland), sophomore Adam Howard of Jacksonville, Illinois (Routt Catholic) and Freeman posted a time of 42.43 seconds.
The distance medley relay of junior Nicholas Johnson of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven), sophomore Brenden Jones of Holland, Michigan (Black River), junior Ryan Holman of Holmen, Wisconsin (Holmen), and sophomore Drew Schmitz of Westfield, Indiana (Westfield) finished sixth at 1108.52.
Junior Tucker Gibbons of Fowlerville, Michigan (Fowlerville) placed seventh in the triple jump at 12.66 meters.
Maurice was eighth in the long jump at 6.35 meters.
NCAA Division II Cedarville (Ohio) won with 117 points. Tennessee Wesleyan was runner-up with 73 points. Division II Columbus State was third with 72 points.
