Hayley Reitsma Breaks School Record, Ties MIAA Record In Loss To Calvin

Box Score 1

Catcher Hayley Reitsma blasted a school-record 11th home run of the season on Monday against Calvin and tied a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association record for homers too.

It was a consolation prize as the Flying Dutch were swept 2-1 and 4-1 on Senior Day at Wolters Stadium.

No. 20-ranked Hope (23-6 overall) fell into a second-place tie in the MIAA standings with Calvin. Both teams are 9-3 in league play. With Monday's outcome, Saint Mary's (13-1 MIAA) clinched a share of the regular-season title and the top seed for next week's MIAA Tournament.

Reitsma, a senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian HS), homered in the top of the first inning of Game 2. It was her ninth home run this season against MIAA pitchers and put her atop the league record book with three Trine players.

The Flying Dutch held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third when Calvin (24-5) capitalized on three Hope errors for a four-run rally.

Calvin starter Ellie Borst limited Hope to two hits.

In Game 1, Hope threatened to even the score in its last at-bat.

First baseman Shay Pinhey of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer) scored on a two-out throwing error. The Flying Dutch stranded runners at second and third when second baseman Sierra Mutschler of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland) flew out to center.

Pinhey went 2-for-4. Hope had seven hits.

Hope returns to action on Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at Alma.
