Men's Golf Beats Two Ranked Opponents For Match Play Title

The Hope College men's golf team didn't mind the rainy and chilly conditions in Greensboro, N.C.

The 13th-ranked Flying Dutchmen were too busy having fun and winning to care about the weather.

Hope finished a perfect run through the two-day Match Play Invitational Saturday with a 3-1-1 semifinal victory against No. 8 and tournament host Guilford and a 3-1-1 championship-clinching victory against sixth-ranked Tyler-Texas.

Head coach Scott Lokers said his team enjoyed an unusual format.

"Everybody contributed," Lokers said. "We don't get to play match play often in college. We were very supportive of each other and played some really good golf."

In the finals, senior Kade Hoeksema of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian) led the Flying Dutch with a 4&3 victory.

Sophomore Daniel Settecerri of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (Bloomfield Hills) won his match 4&2.

Junior Ben Kramer of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake) topped his opponent 1up.

Junior Josh Gibson of Grandville, Michigan (Grandville) played to a draw.

"Today was challenging," Lokers said. "It rained the whole day, got colder as the day went on and finished in the 40. Everybody stayed positive, really did a great job."

The Flying Dutchmen won 14 of their 20 matches and tied four of them during the tournament. Junior Andrew Goble of Brighton, Michigan (Brighton) won twice on Friday.
