Three first-place performances pushed the Hope College men's outdoor track & field team to a third-place finish at the 10-team Wheaton (Illinois) Invitational on Saturday.
Junior Justin Freeman of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) led a pack of four Flying Dutchmen in the 100-meter finals with a winning time of 10.73 seconds.
Freeman, pictured at right, also anchored the first-place 4x100 relay. Sophomore Korey Derr of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Northview), sophomore Emmanuel Harinda of Holland, Michigan (Holland), and sophomore Adam Howard of Jacksonville, Illinois (Routt Catholic) clocked a time of 42.02 seconds.
The victorious 4x400 relay featured freshman Terrell Solberg of Traverse City, Michigan (Central), junior Collin Thomas of Novi, Michigan (Novi), junior Eddie Ip of Grand Rapids, Michigan (South Christian), and senior Matt Ruff of Wayne, Illinois (Wheaton Academy) going 3:26.30.
Junior Chase Gaca of Kingsley, Michigan (Kingsley Area), pictured at left, placed third in the discus with a toss of 38.92 meters (127-8). Sophomore Timothy Ivery of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (Birmingham Brother Rice) was seventh at 35.22 meters (115-7)
Howard took fourth in the 100 meters at 11.07 seconds. Harinda came in fifth at 11.09, while Derr was seventh with a season-best 11.24.
Three Hope runners scored in the 200 meters: Howard in fourth at 22.66, Solberg in fifth with a season-best 22.75, and Freeman in seventh with a season-best 22.92.
Thomas took fourth in the 800 meters with a run of 1:59.03. Sophomore Ty Hergenreder of Davison, Michigan (Goodrich) was eighth at 2:01.66.
Sophomore Joshua Izenbart of Glenwood, Illinois (Homewood-Flossmoor) placed fourth in the 100 hurdles at 16.46.
Junior Tucker Gibbons of Fowlerville, Michigan (Fowlerville) finished fourth in the 400 hurdles at 57.77. Izenbart was sixth at 57.86. Both were season-bests.
Sophomore Brandon Maurice of Howell, New Jersey (Howell) placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.26 meters (40-2 ¾). Gibbons was sixth at 12.25 (40-2 ¼).
Izenbart tied for fifth in the high jump by clearing 1.87 meters (6-1 ½). Maurice came in seventh at 1.87 meters, while freshman Ethan Larson of Glen Ellyn, Illinois (Glenbard West) was eighth at 1.87 meters.
Junior Ben Turner of Albion, Michigan (Olivet) took sixth in the pole vault at 4.13 meters (13-6 ½).
Ruff posted a sixth-place run in the 400 meters of 50.75. Solberg was seventh at 50.99.
Junior Brett Slayton of Holland, Michigan (Hamilton) clocked a seventh-place effort in the 5,000 meters of a season-best 15:53.62. Senior Jacob Jensen of Johnston, Iowa (Johnston) was eight at 16:00.95.
Junior Tyler Webb of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grandville) recorded an eighth-place shot put heave of 11.86 meters (38-11).
North Central (Illinois) was first with 207 points. Wisconsin-Stevens Point was runner-up with 129.5 points.
