Day 1 Roundup: NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Hope College's Joshua Izenbart is in 10th place after the first day of the decathlon at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

The sophomore from Glenwood, Illinois (Homewood-Flossmoor HS) totaled 3,325 points during five events on Thursday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The top eight finishers earn All-America honors after Friday's competition.

Izenbart's top performance came in the high jump. He cleared 6 feet, 7 ½ inches for the second-highest leap among decathletes.

He clocked times of 12.07 seconds in the 100 meters and 52.23 seconds in the 400 meters.

He threw 11.63 meters (38 feet, 2 inches) in the shot put. He went 5.91 meters (19-5) in the long jump.

Izenbart, pictured, will do the 110 hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin, and 1,500-meter run on Friday.

Senior Benjamin Pederson of Mount Prospect, Illinois (Prospect) finished 16th in his qualifying race in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and did not advance to Saturday's final. He recorded a time of 9:30.10.

Heptathlete Alison Rich is in 22nd place after the day of competition with 2,310 points. The senior from Haslett, Michigan (Haslett) ran 16.17 seconds in the 110 hurdles and 28.94 seconds in the 200 meters.

Rich cleared 1.48 meters (4-10 ¼) in the high jump and tossed 9.80 meters (29-2 ¼) in the shot put.

She will compete in the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meters on Friday.
