The Rivalry Preview: Men's Basketball At Calvin

The Hope College men's basketball team renews The Rivalry with Calvin College tonight in Grand Rapids. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:08 p.m.

The 199th Hope-Calvin game will be broadcast on television in West Michigan on WGVU and online. You can listen to the game on 92.7 The Van on the radio and online.

Hope leads all-time series, 103-95.

Hope-Calvin History

The Flying Dutchmen enter the game with an 8-5 overall record, while Calvin is 6-7. Both teams are 1-1 in MIAA play and tied for third place.

Jason Beckman tops the MIAA in scoring at 21.2 points per game. This season, he has four 30-point games with 33 apiece against Greenville, Ohio Northern, Grace Christian and Wisconsin-Platteville, and one 20-point game with 27 at Anderson. He has reached double-digits in scoring in every game this season.

Riley Lewis leads NCAA Division III and the MIAA in free-throw shooting at 98.2 percent (54-55). He has made 46 consecutive free throw after missing his final attempt in the second half during the season opener against Greenville.

Only 106 points separate Hope and Calvin after 198 games, a difference of only 0.54 points per game. Hope has scored 13,514 points, an average of 68.2575 per game. Calvin has scored 13,408 points, an average of 67.7171 per game.

The Flying Dutchmen are 7-6 all-time at Calvin's Van Noord Arena since its debut, including a 76-59 victory last season.

Hope coach Greg Mitchell owns a 5-5 record against Calvin since becoming head coach prior to the 2014-15 season. Mitchell went 6-3 against the Knights as a player between the 1985-86 and 1988-89 seasons. Calvin coach Kevin Vande Streek is 25-38 vs. Hope since his debut with the Knights in the 1996-97 season.
