The Hope College women's swimming and diving team divided forces and traveled to two separate locations to compete in two separate meets on Saturday. The Flying Dutch split their results, claiming a dual-meet victory but dropping a tri-meet.
At MIAA opponent Alma College, Hope was victorious over the Scots, 152.5-121.5.
Against Davenport University and Saginaw Valley State University at East Kentwood High School, the Flying Dutch were defeated by NCAA Division II opponent SVSU, 154-130, and Davenport University, 201-95.
WINNING RESULTS VERSUS ALMA COLLEGE
Freshman Tarah Lang of Marshall (Marshall HS), pictured right, claimed top individual spots in three events – the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:04.28, 50 free in 25.66, and the 100 free in 57.36.
Freshman Macey Mayer of San Antonio, Texas (Johnson HS) was victorious twice in the 200 butterfly (2:23.91) and 200 backstroke (2:22.14).
In the 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley, freshman Ari Schafer of Barrington, Illinois (Barrington Community HS) won each with times of 2:07.42 and 2:24.18, respectively.
Freshman Anika Wehrmeyer of Holland (Holland HS) finished first in the 50 backstroke in 29.87.
Sophomore Paul Kuhn of Dorr (Hamilton HS) clocked in first in the 500 freestyle in 5:41.59.
Hope also won both relays against Alma. Mayer, freshman Riley Jones of Saline (Saline HS), sophomore Aubrey East of Farmington (North Farmington HS) and sophomore Alexa Paiz Osorio of Kalamazoo (Kalamazoo Central HS) won the opening 400 medley relay in 4:19.70. In the 200 freestyle relay, Jones, Oscorio, Mayer and Lang touched out first in 1:46.32.
TOP TWO RESULTS AGAINST DAVENPORT AND SVSU
Swimming to first place in the tri-meet was senior Erin Emmert of Grand Blanc (Powers Catholic HS) in the 200 butterfly (2:14.39), freshman Sydney Randall of Byron Center (Byron Center HS) in the 50 freestyle (25.23) and freshman Jenna Kloosterman of Hamilton (Hamilton HS) in the 100 butterfly (59.39).
Second-place finishes were clocked in by sophomore Emma Engle of Kalamazoo (Home School) in the 100 freestyle (11:00.85) and junior Emma Schaefer of DeWitt (Saint Johns HS) in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.42) and 200 breaststroke (2:30.72).
Hope took second in both relays as well. In the 200 medley, Emmert, Schaefer, Kloosterman and freshman Emily Kurt of South Lyon (South Lyon) touched out in 1:51.67. In the 200 freestyle, Kloosterman, Randall, Kurt and Schaefer finished with a time of 1:41.07.
The Flying Dutch finish their regular-season competition with two home meets next weekend. On Friday, January 31, Hope will swim against non-conference opponent Carthage College (Wisconsin) at 5 p.m. at the Dow Center. Then, on Saturday, February 1, Hope hosts Kalamazoo College at 11 a.m.
