The Hope College men's indoor track and field team took second place at a four-team meet hosted by Trine University on Saturday.
Senior pole vaulter Barry Bait of Granville, Ohio (Granville HS), pictured right, and the distance medley relay team of sophomore Aidan Jones of West Olive (Black River HS), freshman Joey Gillengerten of East Lansing (Haslett HS), freshman Jack Tamlyn of Wyoming (West Michigan Aviation Academy) and sophomore Anders Bogard of Mattawan (Kalamazoo Christian HS) were first-place event finishers to help lead the Flying Dutchmen to a team score of 137 points.
Trine won the meet with 188 points, while Olivet College was third with 128 and Alma College fourth with 52.
Bait tied with Olivet's Paul Muir for first place in the pole vault by clearing 12-feet, 11.5-inches.
Jones, Gillengerten, Tamlyn and Bogard claimed the distance medley event with a time of 11:11.17.
Other Hope track and field student-athletes finishing on the top three were:
- Junior Nathaniel Trumble of Granger, Indiana (Trinity School At Greenlawn) with a third-place time of 23.25 in the 200-meter finals;
- Junior Drew Dow of Bridgman (Bridgman HS) with a third-place time of 51.57 in the 400-meter finals;
- Jones with a second-place time of 2:03.63 and freshman Daniel Campbell of Brighton (Brighton HS) with a third-place time of 2:03.83 in the 800-meter finals;
- Freshman Eli Meder of Williamston (Lansing Catholic HS) with a second-place time of 4:27.21 and Campbell with a third-place time of 4:30.22 in the mile finals;
- Sophomore Jackson Player of San Antonio, Texas (Winston Churchill HS) with a third-place time of 8.91 in the 60-meter hurdle finals;
- Dow, Nathan Woolum of Mattawan (Mattawan HS), Meder and Trumble with a second-place time of 3:28.41 in the 4x400-meter finals;
- Senior Jared Lowe of Cincinnati, Ohio (Wyoming HS) with a second-place leap of 5-feet, 10-inches and Player with a third-place leap of 5-feet, 8-inches in the high jump finals;
- Junior David McHugh of Whitehall (Reeths Puffer HS) with a second-place leap of 39-feet, 3.75-inches and Lowe with a third-place leap of 38-feet, 3.5-inches in the long jump finals; and,
- Senior Noah Russo of Grand Rapids (East Grand Rapids HS) with a third-place throw of 43-feet, 11.25-inches in the shot put finals.
The Flying Dutchmen compete at Trine University again on Saturday, Feb. 20 in the MIAA Jamboree.
