Sprinters Helen Dodge and Amanda Lines hit their stride at a perfect time for the Hope College women's indoor track and field team.
The two traded turns leading 1-2 finishes in events for the victorious Flying Dutch at a four-team meet hosted by Trine University on Saturday. Hope won with 174 points; outscoring Trine (168), Alma (88), and Olivet (71).
In all, the Flying Dutch recorded the two top performances in four events and took first in nine events total.
Lines, a sophomore from Naples, Florida (First Baptist Academy), won the 60-meter dash in 8.16 seconds. Dodge, a sophomore from Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan (G.P. South) was runner-up at 8.21.
Dodge, pictured left, finished first in the 200 meters with a run of 27.28 seconds. Lines, pictured right, took second at 27.35.
In the 400 meters, freshman Madeline Moore (Hillsdale, Michigan/Hillsdale) clocked a winning time of 1:04.84. Sophomore Claire Benedict (Ada, Michigan/Forest Hills Eastern) was runner-up at 1:05.11.
In the 800 meters, sophomore Samantha Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan/T.C West) won in 2:26.04. Freshman Erin Moran (Arlington Hills, Illinois/John Hersey) was runner-up in 2:26.97.
Benedict won the 60-meter hurdles in 9.61 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 5.50 meters (16 feet, 7 inches). Junior Ellie Haan (McBain, Michigan/Northern Michigan Christian) was third in the long jump at 5.69 meters (15-4 ¾).
Benedict also led off the first-place 4x400 relay that went 4:21.09 with Moran, Schermerhorn, and Moore.
Sophomore Heleyna Tucker (Midland, Michigan/H.H Dow) recorded a winning time in the mile with a run of 5:24.96.
Sophomore Katie Selenko (Tecumseh, Michigan/Tecumseh) posted a first-place effort in the 3,000 meters of 11:42.72.
Hope clocked a first-place distance medley relay time of 13:54.09 with freshman Jessie Schamanek (Rochester, Michigan/Stoney Creek), junior Erin Kloostra (Kalamazoo, Michigan/Loy Norrix), senior Julia Wilson (Lancaster, Pennsylvania/Lancaster Mennonite), and sophomore Emily Unger (Montague, Michigan/Montague).
Freshman Taylor Novotny (Batavia, Illinois/Batavia) came in second place in the triple jump with a leap of 9.56 meters (31-4 ½).
Sophomore Amelia Bont (Chesterfield, Michigan/Anchor Bay) finished third in the shot put with a toss of 11.62 meters (38-1 ½).
Also on Saturday, Hope's distance medley relay set a school record at the GVSU Big Meet while recording the fastest time of the season in NCAA Division III.
The Flying Dutch's next meet is the Friday, February 19 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Jamboree hosted by Calvin University.
