The Hope College softball team dropped a pair of games to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponents Saturday at Gainey Field in Grand Rapids, falling to Calvin University 7-1 and Albion College 11-0 in five innings.
The two games do not count in the MIAA standings. Hope is now 6-4 on the season.
In the opener, the Flying Dutch fell behind early, 6-0, as Calvin scored two runs in the second inning and four in the third.
Hope got on the board in the top of the fifth as sophomore right fielder Cayley Ebeling of Shelby Township, Michigan (Utica HS) singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by freshman center fielder Peyton Benjamin of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Eaton Rapids HS).
The Flying Dutch's other hit in the game was a single by junior Kaelin Callow of Plainfield, Illinois (Plainfield HS).
Freshman Maddie Gracin of Saint Clair Shores, Michigan (Warren Regina HS) took the pitching loss for Hope, allowing six runs in 2-1/3 innings of work in her first start of the season. Junior Chloe Haskins of Brighton, Michigan (Brighton HS) limited the Knights to one run in 3-2/3 innings of relief, chalking up five strikeouts and not allowing a walk.
Against Albion, Hope managed just two hits — a second-inning single by senior pitcher Megan Soderbloom of Dowagiac, Michigan (Dowagiac HS) and a fourth-inning single by junior second baseman Arinn King of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville HS).
Albion scored five runs in the second and six in the fourth as the game ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Soderbloom took the loss on the mound in the nightcap to fall to 3-2 on the season. She allowed seven runs and seven hits in three innings of work.
The Flying Dutch return to MIAA action on the road Wednesday with a doubleheader at Adrian College. First pitch is 3 p.m.
