Men's Golf Returns to Action with a Third-Place Finish

by Eva Dean Folkert

Logan DeWitt poses for a headshot photo In just his second start in the Hope College men's golf team's top five, freshman Logan DeWitt, pictured, led the Flying Dutchmen by carding a two-over 73 in the fifth MIAA Jamboree at the Kalamazoo Country Club on Wednesday. His score tied him for second place individually.

As a team, Hope finished in third place with a total of 302.

Trine University won the match with the lowest team total of 296, followed by Calvin University which shot a 298.

In the overall standings, the Trine Thunder leads the league with a team-low 1,469 strokes while the third-place Flying Dutchmen (1,513) are now just one stroke back of the second-place Knights (1,512).

The final MIAA Jamboree will be played on Saturday, April 24 at the PohlCat Golf Course in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, hosted by Alma College.

DeWitt, from Zeeland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), was clicking on a cold April day, said head coach Scott Lokers.

"We had some snow flurries out there but that really did not impact the round," Lokers observed. "The greens were really fast, though, and they had some really challenging pin positions. Kalamazoo Country Club is not a long golf course; the greens are the defense and today the greens were difficult.

"Logan played really well and was just solid in every part of his game. That was good to see. Seth Almquist has been playing better. That was good to see, too. . . We were ready to get back to tournament play (after a week off). We wanted to bounce back from the round at Calvin (where they finished fourth with a 323). I was pleased with what we did today."

Almquist, a sophomore from Minneapolis, Minnesota (Wayzata HS), fired a four-over 75 which placed him in a tie for sixth place.

One stroke back was freshman Will Robson (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS) who shot a five-over 76.

Sophomore Jack Crawford (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) added a round of 78 and freshman Brian Marx (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) carded an 87.
