With one school record, one race win and eight new career-best times, a small but mighty contingent of 10 student-athletes represented the Hope women's and men's track and field teams at the 54th Annual GINA Relays, hosted by Hillsdale College.
The meet attracts some of the best distance runners in the region, with 46 college programs along with a variety of elite sponsored and amateur athletes competing unattached in attendance.
After setting four school records during the 2021 indoor campaign, Ana Tucker, pictured left, wrote her name in the outdoor record book for the first time after her stellar performance in the 5,000 meter championship race on Friday.
The sophomore out of Midland, Michigan (Herbert Henry Dow) lowered the standard to 16:37.99, dethroning Erin Herrmann's time of 17:03.05 from the 2017 season. Tucker placed seventh overall.
Although Nick Hoffman (Holland, Michigan / Holland), pictured right, was less than two tenths shy of his career-best time in the 1,500 meters, his mark of 3:49.65 still earned the junior the top spot on the podium. It was Hoffman's fourth race win of the outdoor season and first in the 1,500.
The Flying Dutch opened the meet on Thursday with the 5,000-meter open.
Rebecca Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd) lowered her collegiate-best time in the 5,000 meters to 17:56.03. The freshman was the top Division III runner and seventh overall in a field featuring 77 competitors.
Also finishing in the top third of the field was fellow freshman Libby Gorman. The Traverse City, Michigan (St. Francis) native ran her best time of the season with an 18:19.68 to finish in 20th place.
For the second-straight meet, Dan Campbell (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) lowered his collegiate-best mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The freshman clocked a 9:29.55 to shave a full 15 seconds off his previous personal standard and place 12th overall.
On the women's side, Hannah Kenny (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) lowered her collegiate-best mark by 18 seconds with a 12th-place time of 11:00.50. Katie Cole (Batavia, Illinois / Batavia) earned a new career-best time of her own, crossing the finish line at the 12:01.41 mark.
Rounding out Hope's list of career-best performances was Jacinda Cole (Holland, Michigan / Holland) in the 1,500 meters (4:37.18) and Anna Mason (Zeeland, Michigan / Libertas Christian) in the 5,000 meters (19:02.20)
Both the men's and womens teams continue this week's action on Saturday, April 24 at Davenport University.
