The Hope College baseball team got into the swing of things just in time.
The Flying Dutchmen erupted for a 17-9 victory at Calvin University on Friday after losing the opener, 7-1.
The two teams are scheduled to conclude their series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Boeve Stadium on Saturday, April 24.
Hope matched its second-highest run total of the season by pounding out 13 hits, including seven for extra bases, and capitalizing on 10 walks by Calvin pitchers. The Flying Dutchmen scored in every inning.
A three-run double from catcher Cal Barrett (Chelsea, Michigan/Chelsea HS), pictured right, in the top of the second inning gave Hope the lead for good at 6-4. The next batter, shortstop Brant Kym (Libertyville, Illinois/Libertyville), knocked in Barrett with a single.
Barrett also had an RBI double in a three-run first. He went 3-for-5 with three doubles and four runs batted in.
Left fielder Kainan Bayn (Zeeland, Michigan/Zeeland East), pictured left, also totaled four runs batted in. He went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Center fielder Evan Maday (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Kentwood) slugged a solo homer and finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. It was Maday's fifth home run of the season — a career-high — and the ninth of his career.
Graham O'Gorman, Hope's second pitcher, earned the win in relief. The righthander from Champaign, Illinois (Champaign Central) scattered six hits and one unearned run over three innings.
In Game 1, Bayn recorded two of Hope's five hits. Maday drove in Cable with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly.
Calvin never trailed after scoring twice in the bottom of the first.
Hope is now 12-13 overall and 5-8 in MIAA play. Calvin is 13-11 overall and 8-6 in MIAA games.
