Men's Track and Field

Nick Hoffman is MIAA Most Valuable Track Athlete, Chris Stamatopoulos Also All-MIAA

by Eva Dean Folkert

No matter where Nick Hoffman races, he's bound to make an impression.

The junior middle-distance runner has done that quite a bit this year. And because of it, he headlines this spring's All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men's Outdoor Track and Field team as the Most Valuable Outdoor Track Athlete.

Hoffman, a public accounting major from Holland, Michigan (Holland HS), was also named the 2021 indoor most valuable track athlete back in March after he captured two events at the league's indoor championships.

At the 2021 MIAA Field Day last weekend at Alma College, Hoffman topped the podium in two events again.

"He's fast. You can just see the results of the hard work he's put in," said head coach Kevin Cole. "He's one of the best athletes we've had; that's fun to have one of those where you can count on those points. Our conference is always tough in those events (800-m and 1500-m), and he won those. He also ran the 4x400, the first time in that relay and did a great job."

In running to first place in the 800, Hoffman stopped the clock at 1:56.65, 1.5 seconds faster than his prelim time.

In the 1500, he ran a season-best and winning time of 4:00.83 seconds.

Hoffman also ran the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay with David McHugh, Drew Dow and Nathaniel Woolum. The foursome finished second with a time of 3:22.51.

Joining Hoffman on the All-MIAA Team is Chris Stamatopoulos who captured the javelin title. The senior biomedical/biomechanical engineering major from Wheaton, Illinois (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS) threw a career-best distance of 44.49 meters (145 feet-11½ inches).

"I'm excited for Chris. He threw a PR on a day when nobody was throwing well because of the conditions," Cole said. "What an awesome way to cap his senior season."
