A furious finish propelled the Hope College women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory against DePauw University (Indiana) on Friday in the season opener.
The Flying Dutch scored three times in a span of 4 minutes, 15 seconds at Van Andel Soccer Stadium on Community Appreciation Night.
Forward Madison Holloway, pictured, snapped a 1-1 tie with her second goal of the game. The sophomore from Macatawa, Michigan (Holland Christian HS) buried a loose ball bouncing out near the net.
Holloway drew Hope even in the 33rd minute by sinking a left-footed curling shot into the DePauw goal.
In the 81st minute, senior forward Sarah Mikesell (Norton Shores, Michigan / Mona Shores) capitalized on an errant DePauw back pass and scored unassisted.
On the restart, Hope wrestled possession away and set up freshman midfielder Ali Sorg (Lafayette, Indiana / Harrison) for her first collegiate goal. Sophomore midfielder Breck McCloskey (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern) and senior defender Anneliese Lockner (Geneva, Illinois / Geneva Community) both drew assists.
The Flying Dutch dominated offense with 32 shots to DePauw's 7. The Tigers made 13 saves.
Hope sophomore goalkeeper Parker Hutchinson (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) made two saves in her first collegiate start.
The Flying Dutch's next game is Saturday, Sept. 4 vs. Wittenberg University (Ohio) at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
