Men's Golf Closes in on MIAA Championship

The Flying Dutchmen led by 36 strokes heading into the final round.

The Hope College men's golf team is one round away from clinching the 22nd MIAA championship in team history.

The Flying Dutchmen added two more strokes to their overall lead on Friday after carding a first-round 304 during the MIAA Fall Finish at Kaufman Golf Course in Wyoming, Michigan.

Hope heads into the 10 a.m. final round on Saturday, Oct. 15, with a 36-stroke lead over second-place Trine University and a 46-stroke lead over third-place Adrian College.

The MIAA champion is determined by lowest cumulative total after 108 holes this fall. The top four teams qualify for next spring's NCAA Division III Championship qualifier. The MIAA champ hosts the final two rounds of the qualifier; the runner-up the opening round.

On Friday, the Flying Dutchmen finished five strokes behind first-round leader Adrian. Trine University is in third at 306. Calvin University is fourth at 317.

Freshman Will Casey (Northville, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) led Hope on Friday with a 1-over-par 73 that has him tied for fourth place in the Fall Finish's individual standings.

Adrian's Hendrik de Koning stands as the first-round leader after firing a 68.

Senior Seth Almquist (Minneapolis, Minnesota / Wayzata) sits seventh for the Flying Dutchmen after a first-round 75.

Sophomore Will Webb (Lake Forest, Illinois / Lake Forest) is tied for 11th after carding a 77.

Freshman Patrick Michael (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) is tied for 17th at 79.

Junior Will Robson (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) shot a 81.

Playing as an individual, senior Jack Crawford had a 76.
